When I first moved to Saudi Arabia, I never expected to find myself starting a TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return) program. What began as a way to help the many stray cats I saw quickly grew into something much more meaningful. I started fostering a few cats at a time, finding them homes, and slowly creating a small network of people who cared about their wellbeing.

One day, in the middle of all that, I met Aziz. He wasn’t supposed to stay — just like the others, the plan was to care for him until I could find him a forever home. But something about him stuck. Aziz became mine, and in many ways, I became his too.
Living abroad had been lonely and isolating. To be honest, my mental health was sinking. But having something to care for — and later, realizing that I was building a community of people who shared that same love for animals — gave me purpose. The cats weren’t the only ones who were rescued in the process.
That’s one of the hidden truths about fostering: yes, you’re saving lives and giving vulnerable animals a second chance, but fostering also does something profound for you. Caring for a kitten that blossoms under your watch, seeing a shy cat start to trust again, or watching one go off to a loving family — all of those moments lift you up too.

The Positive Effects of Fostering
- For People: Fostering eases feelings of loneliness, gives structure to your day, and creates a deep sense of purpose. Studies even show that caring for animals can lower stress and improve mood. It’s hard not to smile when a kitten curls up on your lap after a long day.
- For Cats: Fostering provides a safe space for kittens and cats to decompress, learn trust, and prepare for adoption. Cats who may have been scared or abandoned begin to thrive in a loving environment, and the difference in their personalities can be incredible to witness.
Some people say fostering would be too hard because you eventually have to let the cat go. And yes, it can be bittersweet. But it’s not just about the goodbye. There’s also pride in knowing that you helped a cat find a safe, loving home — something they might never have had without you. That kind of joy outweighs the sadness every time.
Fostering gives hope to cats who desperately need it. But it also gives healing, connection, and a sense of meaning to the people who step up to help. In the end, both lives are changed — theirs and ours.
